Hello everyone,
For the opening day we start with God in His kitchen.
Gen. 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
This word "created" means His creation was made from scratch and not a combination of other ingredients. There literaly was nothing in existance before God made His creation. The use of Heavens plural is correct as we learn much later in the book from the apostle Paul there are three Heavens (2Cor 12:2).
Gen. 1:3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
The natural state of this new creation was formless and dark, but not for long with God. He introduces light and a concept of time from His kitchen. God's first judgment of his creation was that it was "good".
God continues to stock our kitchen with ingredients until the sixth day when he makes "Man". The final meal is said to be "very good". As we all know this changes because Man has his own ideas of what a good meal is.
